A Woman's Pride
Kathy Moffet
They say they are a woman's pride.
I lie on a gurney in blue smock,
staring at an immaculate drop-ceiling,
waiting and wondering:
when many have neither,
will their enhancement,
their new improved prominence
instill a silicone confidence
and make me more prideful
and you more lustful?
when I hear voices in the anteroom,
yours the very loudest,
something about keeping
the bloody down payment
and then the door opening to
we are getting the hell out of here!
yes, yes
don't you know I love you as you are?
oh yes
is this so-called surgeon going to improve
on what God has shaped and made?
no
plastics-- you can bloody have them!
I button my blouse as we take the stairway,
eschewing elevators.
324 miles you have driven
to ransom me from this pseudo-clinic.
where the hell is the nearest clean motel?
I have no idea
and you
have all kinds of them.
